Osteopathy

Diagnosis and Treatment

Osteopathy diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that your well-being depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Osteopathic Treatment

For your body to work well, its structure must also work well so we aim to restore your body to a state of balance. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. We often advise on posture, exercise, and hydrotherapy to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring. Prevention is always better than cure and this is something that we work with our patients to achieve.

We also use Western Acupuncture in Clinic. Acupuncture and Osteopathy are very complimentary therapies. Research shows that Acupuncture can affect most of the bodies systems and increases the release of natural pain killers. Fine needles are inserted through the skin which has a general health benefit and encourages your body to heal and repair itself. As with everything else we do in clinic, we will discuss this option with you and will only proceed with your consent.

Wellbeing

Osteopathy is not only a physcial remedy, but is also known to combat mental unrest and depression.

Osteopathy

What to expect

The initial consultation generally lasts about 45-60 minutes during which we complete a case history where we listen to you and ask questions about the reason you came to clinic, your general health, other medical care you are receiving or medication you are taking, and record this in your case notes. Anything discussed in session will always be confidential.

We then undertake a thorough physical examination. If you are comfortable doing so, you will be asked to remove some of your clothing so please wear suitable underwear. We will work within your comfort zone. You will be asked to do some simple movements to allow us to observe your posture and mobility. Because of the body’s structure, pain, or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere. With your permission, we will then examine the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using touch.

We will explain and discuss with you what we have found and our working diagnosis, explain our proposed treatment plan, answer any questions or concerns you may have and if all is well, start treating immediately. We will also explain any benefits and risks of any treatments we are recommending. We will always ask your permission before attempting any treatment and we will never use any techniques that you are unhappy with.

Follow up sessions will usually include a chat about how you have been and any changes or concerns since the last session. We usually do a further examination and then progress with treatment.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

This is entirely based on your individual needs and circumstances. Once we have done the initial consultation, we can give you a better idea.

Will I be sore after a session?

Some people are and some aren’t. Each person’s treatment is unique and everyone responds differently however we will always recommend ice packing or other hydrotherapy and stretches to help limit this should the need arise.

WILL I NEED TO UNDRESS?

If you are comfortable doing so, you will be asked to remove some of your clothing so please wear suitable underwear. You will never be asked to remove underwear and we will work within your comfort zone. Should you be uncomfortable about undressing, please wear loose elasticated clothing. You will be asked to do some simple movements to allow us to observe your posture and mobility. Because of the body’s structure, pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere. With your permission, we will then examine the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using touch.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A FOLLOW UP SESSION?

Follow up sessions will usually include a chat about how you have been and any changes or concerns since the last session. We usually do a further physical examination and then progress with treatment.

WHAT IS AN MOT?

We have many patients who periodically accumulate tension or strain in certain parts of their bodies. This can happen with anyone but is very common in office workers, athletes or people whose jobs involve repetitive movement. Many patients often come in at regular intervals as a means of prevention and maintenance rather than waiting for a crisis to bring them in. It is the Osteopathic equivalent to brushing your teeth every day rather than waiting to have a cavity.
